Dave Sonntag owns a rhythm-centric sound. The former professional drummer (having opened for the likes of Karnivool, Bluejuice, and Tijuana Cartel) feeds off catchy drum patterns to start listeners on an alluring ride, while wave-like acoustic riffs keep them there.
The first of Dave’s new releases, “Crystal Ships” – recorded with Matt Gio (Birds of Tokyo, San Cisco, Illy) – flows on the theme of giving up on the chase of romance. An ethereal track with a dreamy vibe, the melody opens as a minimalistic ode and grows into a showering of bass, electric guitars, handclaps, and drums (all of Dave’s doing).
While sitting in the engine room as drummer for some of Perth’s favourite acts (Methyl Ethyl’s Jacob Webb, Ben Catley) Dave has previously flown under the radar as a singer-songwriter. Success as a solo act in China, Austria, and even Canadian mountain tops sees Dave return home to Western Australia where 2018 promises to be an exciting year for the fresh talent.
